Dear Petoskey Athletic Community,
This is not a statement that I ever thought I would be putting out. Today, the MHSAA gave their follow-up to the order handed down by the governor on Wednesday. Effective immediately, all spring sports are cancelled to fall in line with the cancellation of school through the end of the academic year. While this is an unprecedented step taken in our state, it is the right one. To have one of our student/athletes, coaches, parents or fans infected by the virus at a competition would be devastating to the community.
To athletes: I understand the hard work you have been putting in over the last year getting ready for your spring sports season. This can be frustrating and cause a lot of anger since the season was ended from no fault of your own. Keep working hard during this time. Train on your own and continue to put in the work that will make you and your team better. Reach out to your coaches, they want to hear from you. They may have ideas of what you can do on your own and still stay safe. This situation we fine ourselves in, will eventually change and we will get back to playing sports.
To our Seniors: I am truly sorry and feel your pain. This spring is not what you expected for your last semester of High School. The hard work and dedication you have shown to your sports was evident in the first week of the season. You are our leaders and a big part of our programs. Being a leader is huge in a time of uncertainty. Reach out to your coaches and teammates. Talk to them. Just talking and listening is what a lot of people need right now. You do not have to have the answers; just be the leaders you are, and good things will come from this.
To our Parents: Not getting the opportunity to see your child play this spring can bring up a lot of emotions. Some of you would have seen your child’s first high school game. Some of you will miss out on your child’s last game as a Northmen. No matter what position you are in, let your child know how much you like watching them play. While we can’t be on the field of play this spring, you can always talk about some of the best times you had watching them compete. While we are out of school, encourage them to develop a routine and continue working to get better.
To our Community: We greatly appreciate your support of Northmen Athletics. While we will not be competing this spring, we hope to be back this fall. Come out and support your Northmen when it is safe, and our lives are back to “normal”.
Please stay safe and Go Northmen!
